DIY Chalkboard & Lego Wall

Unleash creativity: Build a DIY Kids Chalkboard and LEGO Wall for endless fun!!

About a year ago we turned an empty, un-used landing space outside of our 2nd floor laundry into our kids playroom. We enclosed the wall overlooking the entryway and I put built-ins and shelving on that wall (you can find my blog post on how to DIY built-ins here) to house all our toys and books. My vision for this room was to have a space where my boys could play together, create, learn and watch their imaginations soar.

After the built-ins were done and filled, the pull-out couch and coffee table were delivered, the room looked great! However, there was a small portion of the wall next to the laundry room door that was just a blank white wall, in keeping with the theme of playing and creating I came up with the idea that it would be a great space for a chalkboard wall! On top of that, I also had a ton of Lego pieces that I needed some place to store, so I decided this was not going to be just a chalkboard wall, but a chalkboard and Lego wall! Storage, functionality, and FUN all wrapped into one 6x12 ft wall that had no prior use.

Materials:

Chalkboard Paint - Amazon or Home Depot
Lego Boards
Clear Hanging Bins
Chalk & Eraser
Wall Holder
Command Strips

Tools:

Paint Brush
Paint Roller
Paint Roller Cover
Paint Tray
Power Drill
Measuring Tape
Laser Level
Hammer

Step 1: Paint Your Wall

Paint your wall with chalkboard paint., I used this one from Home Depot. Going over a white wall I needed a couple coats of the chalk paint in order to get that chalkboard look, and because they only come in quart size cans I needed 2.

Step 2: Hang Lego Boards

I found these flat 10x10 in Lego boards on Amazon that were super inexpensive! I bought 9 of them and hung them on the wall going 3 up and 3 across using command strips. Again, super easy, inexpensive DIY that your kids will love and take any playroom or kids room to the next level! I centered the middle Lego board on the wall but lowered it to where my kids can currently reach (because they’re younger its quite a bit lower than the center between the floor and ceiling). After I got that middle Lego board centered at the height I wanted, I put a board on either side, and then did a row directly above and below it.

Step 3: Hang Wall Bins

Amazon no longer has the clear wall bins that I used, but I found these as an alternate great option that can also be used for other toys besides LEGOs. *Note: this is just an option, feel free to search for clear plastic wall bins or toy dispenser! These were the best find, they work GREAT for my boys Legos and makes the whole wall look cute and put together! These would also be super cute for an arts and crafts room to hold crayons, makers, you name it! The bins came with wall anchors and screws, I measured out equal distance across the wall to hang all 4 in a row. I took a 1/8 drill bit in order to drill a pilot hole where each wall anchor would go. After all the pilot holes were done, I hammered in the wall anchors, and then screwed in the bins using a philips head drill bit.

Step 4: Accessorize

This is my favorite step of any project, putting the finished touches that make the space look complete. Putting everything together and accessorizing the wall with chalk, erasers and Legos! I found these little holders on Amazon, I bought 2 of them and using command strips hung them next to the Lego boards on the wall and filled them with chalk and an eraser. I then took all the Legos that my boys have and organized them into the plastic wall bins. The sign is a sweet, simple sign from Target. This one is a few years old, but I found these alternative ones:

The Magic is in You
Count Your Rainbows Not Your Thunderstorms

These are the Lego sets that my kids have and love.

Pixar Cars
Firetruck
Tractor

My kiddos are still on the younger side so these sets are great because the pieces are bigger, some of them, like the firetruck, make noise, and they aren’t too complicated to build together with your little ones!
